Unfairy is a 12-minute virtual reality experience. The interactive film combines 360 footage and 3D design and animation to make the player feel like they've got a foot in both worlds.
The experience was built for the Meta Quest, filmed on an Instapro 360 Pro2 and Insta Pro X3 action cam, designed in Blender and Substance Painter and developed in Unity and Audiokinetic Wwise.

You wake up as Fairy Frankie in her bottle and today’s the big day! It’s your final test to get your wish-fairy licence. All you have to do is make one more wish come true and impress your supervisor, Baz from corporate headquarters. The only problem is delinquent teenage Jovi who’s found your bottle– and she’s got bad breath and a bad attitude to match. You just need to keep your cool and grant Jovi’s wish to be a rockstar, but with your history of anger management issues, Jovi pushes you to your limits. Your rage gets the better of you and you serve up some prickly revenge.
Unfairy is a work in progress and is coming to a headset near you this July 2024.
Unfairy is a passion project in motion for a couple of years in between jobs. It is also a virtual reality smorgasbord of 360 footage, interactive 3D environments, and a musical extravaganza. This project pushed studio kettle's knowledge of VR and what is possible when working with live-action 360 video, and integrating that into 3D environments.
Written and directed by studio kettle's Jess O'Farrell and Aysha Zackariya and developed by Unity extraordinaire Sean O'Connell with sound design by Ryan Granger (Dead On Sound) featuring original music by Johnsen Cummings. Unfairy also features the artistic talents of Daevina Summugan and Jackson Tozer.
This project was funded by Creative Victoria, change in studio kettle's pockets and generous support from everyone in the team.
