CarePlays VR was developed for the portable 6DOF headset, the Oculus Quest 2. When a participant lowers the headset over their eyes, they will embody the character ‘Charlie'; a young person completing a day of work experience in the care sector in the Northern Territory. Charlie joins support workers Talia and Ryan who guide the experience whilst supporting James; a young man in a wheelchair on a recreation day, as well as Aunty Dawn; an older woman at her respite centre.
The participant navigates through the experience by answering questions and selecting modules. Charlie observes scenes shot in 360°, and at times interacts with characters and objects such as filling out a care plan, taking photos at a party, and even reeling in a fish on a fishing trip.
Shot on the Insta360 Pro 2, and developed in Unity thanks to the unstoppable force that is Paperticket Studios.

The VR experience exists as part of a larger CarePlays training program that assists young Indigenous people into employment. The program addresses the increasing workforce gap in the care sector, especially in remote regions and in Indigenous communities.
The training program includes 4 weeks of culturally appropriate training and support for participants to build a meaningful, long-term career. It includes an industry placement in order to put learned skills into action and build passion to work in the caring sector.
The VR resource is integrated into the training curriculum to provide immersive examples of key learnings throughout the course.
CarePlays VR was funded by the Department of Social Services through the Try Test Learn Initiative and spearheaded by Workforce Plus in partnership with National Disability Services (NDS) NT, Karen Sheldon Training, and the Industry Skills Advisory Council NT (ISACNT.)
