Services, institutions, workplaces, and social situations can be unfamiliar, unfriendly, and hard to navigate. Unfortunately, this is sometimes due to people\u2019s prejudices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Challenges are often the result of poorly run institutions or cultural differences. Australia also has policies in place that disadvantage newly arrived migrants. For example, there is a waiting period before new arrivals can access things like government subsidised healthcare, education and support payments. We run support programs for people with refugee, asylum seeker and migrant backgrounds. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>support for families<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>help finding work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support services for women with refugee, asylum seeker and migrant backgrounds&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>refugee children outreach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assistance for refugee communities to access services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more about BSL\u2019s work for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsl.org.au\/services\/refugees-immigration\/\">refugees and migrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SBS settlement guide<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SBS (Special Broadcasting Service) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/language\/english\/en\/settlement-guide\">Settlement Guide<\/a> covers topics related to personal finance. You can read, listen, and watch in up to 50 different languages. Its purpose is to help people new to Australia feel welcome and develop a sense of belonging. It\u2019s useful even if you\u2019ve been here for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MyAus app<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myausapp.com\/\">The MyAus app <\/a>is a directory by not-for-profit organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/socialpolicy.org.au\/\">The Social Policy Group<\/a> for navigating life in Australia as a new migrant. You can find information on all topics related to settling in this country in your preferred language.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To start using the app, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myausapp.com\/\">download it<\/a> and register on your platform of choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Refugee support services<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Included are refugee-specific services you may find useful. You can use this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centrelink.gov.au\/custsite_pfe\/pymtfinderest\/paymentFinderEstimatorPage.jsf?wec-appid=pymtfinderest&amp;wec-locale=en_US#stay\">tool<\/a> to learn about your eligibility for payments, including support<a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/migrating-to-australia?context=60041\"> for migrants<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/refugees-and-asylum-seekers?context=60041\">refugees and asylum seekers<\/a><strong>, <\/strong>or go to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicesaustralia.gov.au\/centrelink?context=1\"> Services Australia<\/a> to learn more about the services and support they offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dealing with Centrelink<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people find dealing with Centrelink difficult. Applying for payments can be confusing. It\u2019s free and anonymous.
